Messier 72 (M72, NGC 6981) on Vesimiehen tähdistössä sijaitseva pallomainen tähtijoukko, jonka ranskalainen tähtitieteilijä Pierre Méchain löysi vuonna 1780. Charles Messier lisäsi sen luetteloonsa samana vuonna. Himmeytensä vuoksi he pitivät joukkoa aluksi kaasusumuna, mutta nykyään sen tiedetään olevan noin 55 000 valovuoden päässä Linnunradan keskuksen toisella puolella sijaitseva tähtijoukko. Noin 8-9 miljardin vuoden ikäisenä se on varsin nuori pallomaiseksi joukoksi.


M72:n suhteellinen kirkkaus on 9,4, joten sen näkemiseen tarvitaan kiikari. Yksittäisten tähtien erottaminen vaatii jo keskikokoisen kaukoputken.
