Töyhtökäärmekurki (Cariama cristata) on eteläamerikkalainen kurjen kaltainen lintu. Se ei ole kuitenkaan sukua kurjelle vaan haukoille, papukaijoille ja varpusille. Käärmekurjet ovat hirmulintujen lähimpiä eläviä sukulaisia.

Koko ja ulkonäkö |


Töyhtökäärmekurki kasvaa noin 75 cm pitkäksi. Sen höyhenpeite on harmaanruskea, jalat vaaleanpunaiset ja nokka punainen. Se pakenee vihollisiaan juoksemalla. Juoksunopeudeksi on mitattu jopa 70 km/h.[2] Käärmekurjilla on Velociraptorin tapaan pysty koukkumainen raatelukynsi.



Levinneisyys |


Töyhtökäärmekurkea tavataan Brasilian keski- ja itäosissa, Boliviassa, Paraguayssa ja Uruguayssä sekä Argentiinan keskiosissa.[3]



Elinympäristö |


Töyhtökäärmekurki viihtyy avoimella ruohikolla ja harvassa metsässä.



Ravinto |


Töyhtökäärmekurki syö kovakuoriaisia, liskoja, käärmeitä ja jyrsijöitä sekä viljaa.
