Don Black, oik. Donald Blackstone[1] (s. 21. kesäkuuta 1938 Lontoo), on englantilainen sanoittaja ja teatterikäsikirjoittaja. Hänet tunnetaan muun muassa James Bond -tunnuskappaleiden sanoittamisesta sekä hänen työstään brittiläisen säveltäjä Andrew Lloyd Webberin kanssa.



Elämä ja ura |


Lontoon Hackneystä kotoisin oleva Black aloitti uransa stand up -koomikkona. Sanoittajana hänen debyyttinsä oli John Barryn West End -musikaali Billy. Vuonna 1966 Barryn ja Blackin kappale ”Born Free” voitti parhaan laulun Oscar-palkinnon.[2]Michael Jacksonin esittämä vuoden 1972 kappale ”Ben” nousi Britanniassa listaykköseksi[3] ja palkittiin seuraavana vuonna parhaan laulun Golden Globe -palkinnolla.[4]


Black sanoitti Lloyd Webberin musikaalit Tell Me on a Sunday, Sunset Boulevard ja Aspects of Love.[5]Sunset Boulevardista hän voitti parhaan käsikirjoituksen ja parhaan sanoituksen Tony-palkinnot.[2]


Black sanoitti musiikkia yhdysvaltalaisen Quincy Jonesin säveltämälle Riehakas ryöstö (engl. The Italian Job) -elokuvan musiikkiraidalle vuonna 1969.[5] Yhteensä hän on sanoittanut urallaan yli sata elokuvamusiikkikappaletta. Muita Blackin musiikkia sisältäviä elokuvia ovat muun muassa Kova kuin kivi (1969), Vaaleanpunainen pantteri iskee jälleen (1976), Minun Afrikkani (1985) ja Tanssii susien kanssa (1990). Hän on sanoittanut tunnuskappaleet viiteen James Bond -elokuvaan: Pallosalama (1965), Timantit ovat ikuisia (1971), 007 ja kultainen ase (1974), Huominen ei koskaan kuole (1997) ja Kun maailma ei riitä (1999).[2]
