Tarinan mukaan pouding chômeur sai alkunsa 1930-luvun Suuren laman aikana. Leivonnaisen nimi pouding chômeur viittaakin työttömien leivonnaiseen. Työläisväestön taloudellisen ahdingon aikana jouduttiin käyttämään yksinkertaisia raaka-aineita. Pouding chômeurin taikina valmistettiin voista, jauhoista, maidosta ja kananmunista. Leivonaisen makea kastike lienee tehty alun perin ruskeasta sokerista, mutta sittemmin sen valmistuksessa on siirrytty vaahterasiirapin käyttöön. Usein miten kotona valmistetusta leivonnaisesta tuli suosittu Quebecissä. Hitaammin se levisi myös Ontarion puolelle ja muualle Kanadaan. Leivonnaista voidaan kuitenkin pitää edelleen tyypillisen quebeciläisenä annoksena, jota tarjoillaan nykyisin myös ravintoloissa. Ravintoloissa alkuperäiseen yksinkertaiseen leivonnaiseen on myös lisätty ainesosia.[1]


Nykyisin pouding chômeur valmistetaan kuumentamalla vaahterasiirappia lähes kiehumispisteeseen. Vaahterasiirappiin lisätään taikina ja kostukkeeksi maitoa. Tämän jälkeen annos paistetaan uunissa ja tarjoillaan esimerkiksi kerman tai kuuman vaahterasiirapin kera.[1]
