Askeleen jäljessä on seitsemäs Kurt Wallanderista kertova rikosromaani, jonka on kirjoittanut Henning Mankell ja joka ilmestyi vuonna 1997. Se on filmattu kahdesti: ruotsinkielisessä versiossa Wallanderia esittää Rolf Lassgård ja englanninkielisessä Kenneth Branagh.

Varoitus:  Seuraava kirjoitus paljastaa yksityiskohtia juonesta.

Elokuussa 1996 Wallanderin kollega Svedberg löydetään murhattuna. Käy ilmi, että Svedberg on vapaa-ajallaan tutkinut tapausta, jossa kolme nuorta katosivat jäjettömiin saman vuoden juhannusaattona. Sitten poliisit löytävät nuoretkin murhattuina. Murhaaja oli ensin haudannut murhaamansa nuoret ja kolme kuukautta myöhemmin kaivanut heidät esiin.


Murhaajan motiivi näyttäisi olevan, että hän ei siedä onnellisia ihmisiä ja siksi valitsee heitä uhrikseen. Myös Svedbergin elämästä löytyy jälkeenpäin yllättäviä salaisuuksia.


Tässä kirjassa Wallander saa tietää sairastavansa diabetesta, mutta ei kerro siitä kellekään työtovereistaan tai perheenjäsenistään.
