Sir George Gabriel Stokes 1860-luvulla.


Sir George Gabriel Stokes, baronetti (13. elokuuta 1819 Skreen, Irlanti – 1. helmikuuta 1903 Cambridge, Englanti) oli irlantilaissyntyinen matemaatikko ja fyysikko.[1] Hän teki koko uransa Cambridgen yliopistossa, jonka Lucas-professuurin haltija hän oli vuodesta 1849 aina kuolemaansa saakka. Stokes teki uraauurtavia tutkimuksia virtausdynamiikassa (muun muassa Navierin–Stokesin yhtälöt), optiikassa ja matemaattisessa fysiikassa (muun muassa Stokesin lauseen popularisointi).


Stokesin lause on saanut nimensä George Stokesin mukaan. Lauseen kuitenkin keksi skotlantilainen William Thomson (tunnetaan paremmin nimellä lordi Kelvin). Stokes sai lauseen Thomsonin kirjeestä vuonna 1850 ja pyysi vuonna 1854 oppilaitaan Cambridgen yliopistossa todistamaan sen oikeaksi.[2] Vuonna 1851 Stokes esitteli ensi kerran virtausmekaniikkaan liittyvän vakion, joka myöhemmin nimettiin sen vuonna 1883 esitelleen fyysikko Osborne Reynoldsin mukaan[3]. Näiden vuoden 1851 tutkimusten tuloksena syntyi Stokesin laki.[4]


Stokes oli Cambridge Philosophical Societyn puheenjohtajana vuosina 1859–1861 ja Lontoon Royal Societyn puheenjohtajana vuosina 1885–1890. Vuonna 1893 Royal Society myönsi hänelle Copley-mitalin. Vuosina 1886–1903 Stokes oli Lontoon Victoria-instituutin puheenjohtaja tarkoituksenaan tutkia tieteen ja uskonnon yhtäläisyyksiä. Stokes aateloitiin vuonna 1899.[4]
