Necrolestes (nimen merkitys: ”haudankaivaja”) on sukupuuttoon kuollut nisäkkässuku, jota tavattiin 16 miljoonaa vuotta sitten varhaisella mioseenilla. Sen on heimonsa Necrolestidae ainoa suku. Necrolestes on viimeinen tunnettu Dryolestidan jäsen.

Elintavat |


Necrolestes saattoi kasvaa 15 senttiä pitkäksi. Koska eläimellä oli monia hienoja hampaita, on ajateltu että Necrolestes söi hyönteisiä tai matoja. Leuan kärki oli oudosti ylöspäinkääntynyt ja muodosti ehkä lihaisen ulokkeen joka toimi herkkänä tuntoelimenä jolla eläin etsi ruokansa, ehkä hieman kuten nykyisen tähtikuonokontiaisen nenäreikiä ympäröivä monimutkainen tuntosarvien kehä. On myös mahdollista että se eli kaivautuen maan alle, mistä sen nimikin juontuu.



Löydöt |


Necrolestesin luurangosta tunnetaan kolmasosa, sisältäen suurimman osan kalloa. Patagoniasta Santa Cruzin muodostumasta on löydetty useiden yksilöiden irrallisia luita.



Luokittelu |


Suku Necrolestes koostuu kahdesta lajista: N. patagonensis ja N. mirabilis. Necrolestes kuvattiin alun perin istukallisena hyönteissyöjänä vuonna 1891 ja luokiteltiin myöhemmin metateeriksi. Paremmat löydöt ovat johtaneet nykyiseen luokitteluun Dryolestidassa. Vuonna 2012 päättyneessä Necrolestesin taksonomisessa tutkimuksessa se sijoitettiin Meridiolestidaan Cronopio läheisenä sukulaisena.[1]
