Hubbertin käyrä muistuttaa muodoltaan normaalijakauman tiheysfunktiota. Se oli alun perin tarkoitettu mallintamaan maaöljyn tuotannon määrää. Hubbertin käyrän mukaan öljyntuotannon määrä perustuu uusien öljykenttien löytymiseen; siten öljyhuippua seuraa asteittainen tuotannon väheneminen.
