Biomuovi on muovi, joka koostuu kokonaan tai osittain uusiutuvista luonnon raaka-aineista. Osa biomuoveista myös maatuu verrattain nopeasti eli on biohajoavia.[1] Toisaalta myös osa öljypohjaisista muoveista on biohajoavia, vaikka ne eivät ole biomuoveja, mikä aiheuttaa sekaannuksia biomuovi-käsitettä käytettäessä.[2]

Ollakseen biohajoava muovin molekyylien tulee kemiallisesti hajota luonnossa esiintyviksi aineiksi. Pelkkä mekaaninen pilkkoutuminen ei riitä. Mekaanisessa hajoamisessa vain ns. sekundääriset sidokset hajoavat. Näin muovi voi pilkkoutua silmin näkymättömän pieneksi ja näkyä vain mikroskoopilla tarkasteltuna. Silti muovin ns. primääriset sidokset säilyvät eli polymeerit itsessään pysyvät kasassa ja myös polymeerien ja seosaineiden liitokset säilyvät. Vasta kun myös polymeerit ja mahdolliset seosaineet itsessään hajoavat voidaan muovin katsoa maatuneen, eikä se tällöin enää ole luonnonkiertokulussa olevaa muovijätettä.[3]
