Odysseus esitettynä pilos päässään.


Pilleus (latinaksi) tai pilos (kreikaksi) oli antiikin Roomassa ja Kreikassa käytetty matkahattu. Se oli yleensä valmistettu huovasta, villasta tai nahasta, ja muodoltaan se oli pyöreä, ylöspäin suippeneva, hieman kartiomainen. Muinaisen kreikan asukkaille matkahatussa esiintyvä ihminen tiedettiin matkustavaiseksi ja siten taiteessa sillä oli symbolista merkitystä eli sitä käytettiin ilmaisemaan esitetyn henkilön matkalla oloa. Esimerkiksi Hermes, kulkevien ihmisten suojelija, kuvattiin usein matkahattu päässään.[1]


Lakkia käytettiin alemman sosiaaliluokan piirissä lähinnä Saturnalia-juhlien ja orjien vapautuksen aikaan. Pilleus sai vapauslakin merkityksen Caesarin murhan jälkeen, kun sitä käytettiin aiheena symboloimaan vapautta Brutuksen lyöttämissä kolikoissa.[2] Vapaiden orjien päähineenä se liitettiin vapauden Libertas-jumalattareen.[3][4]
