Laivatyypit

Ruutilaiva, ruutiholkki oli erityisesti irrallisen ruudin kuljettamiseen suunniteltu purjeilla tai airoilla liikkuva kuljetusalus.


Ruutiholkin kuljetustilojen seinät oli yleensä pehmustettu ja lastausluukut tiivistetty, sillä ruuti oli niin vedelle kuin tulellekin arkaa. Lastitilassa liikuttiin aina huopatossut jalassa, sillä kengänpohjien naulat saattoivat iskeä kipinää osuessaan metalliin.


Tulenvaarasyistä aluksella ei ollut minkäänlaista tulta, ei edes lamppuja, vaan lastaaminen tapahtui päiväsaikaan.


Ruuti kuljetettiin turvallisuussyistä aina tynnyreihin pakattuna, ja vasta käyttöpaikalla se pakattiin panospusseihin.


Britit sijoittivat omiin ruutiholkkeihinsa myös ammusosaston, jossa oli kuulia tavallisimpiin laivatykkeihin, musketteihin ja pistooleihin. Erikoisammukset kuormattiin erikseen.


Alustyyppi katosi käytöstä yhtaikaa irtoruudin myötä, kun takaa ladattaviin tykkeihin oli taloudellisempaa tehdä valmiita panoksia.


Tosin joissakin raskaimmissa tykeissä, muun muassa Iowa-luokan taistelulaivojen 406 mm päätykeissä, käytettiin teknisistä syistä loppuun asti säkkeihin pakattua irtoruutia.
