Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 5 (LC-5) on entinen rakettien laukaisualusta Cape Canaveralin lentotukikohdassa Floridassa. Alustaa käytettiin Jupiter-A-, Jupiter-C-, PGM-19 Jupiter-, Juno I-, PGM-11 Redstone-, Juno II-, Redstone MRLV -rakettien laukaisuihin.

Historia |


LC-5 -laukaisualustan rakennustyöt käynnistyivät vuonna 1954. Alustalta laukaistiin käyttönsä aikana muun muassa Ham-simpanssin avaruuteen vienyt Mercury-Redstone 2-lento, sekä ensimmäisen yhdysvaltalaisen astronautin suborbitaali Mercury-Redstone 3-laukaisu, sekä Gus Grissomin suborbitaali Mercury-Redstone 4-lento.[1]
Alustan käyttö päättyi Grissomin Mercury-Redstone 4 -lentoon, ja se museoitiin vuoden 1964 tammikuussa. LC-5:lle pystytettiin muistomerkiksi Redstone-raketti.[2] Alustan betonisessa suojabunkkerissa on edelleen jäljellä Mercury-ohjelmassa käytettyä tekniikkaa.[3]

  • Epäonnistunut Mercury-Redstone 1 -laukaisu. Kapselin pelastustorni käynnistyi alustalla 21. marraskuuta 1960.







  • Ham-simpanssin avaruuteen kuljettanut Mercury-Redstone 2 nousee alustalta 31. tammikuuta 1961.







  • Ensimmäisen yhdysvaltalaisen avaruuteen vienyt Mercury-Redstone 3 nousee alustalta 5. toukokuuta 1961.
