Smithinsalmi (engl. Smith Sound, tansk. Smith Sund) on Grönlannin ja Kanadan pohjoisimman saaren, Ellesmerensaaren, välissä sijaitseva salmi. Salmi on leveydeltään 48–72 kilometriä, ja on pohjoissuunnassa noin 88 kilometriä pitkä. Se on osa Naresinsalmea ja yhdistyy etelässä Baffininlahteen ja pohjoisessa Kanen altaaseen.[1] Naresinsalmi on puolestaan Kansainvälisen hydrografisen järjestön (IHO) (1953) merialueiden rajalinjausten mukaan Baffininlahden pohjoisosan nimitys.[2]




Taiteilijan näkemys kapteeni Allen Youngin (1827–1915) johdolla purjehtineesta brittialus HMS Pandorasta Smithinsalmessa vuonna 1876.


William Baffin löysi salmen vuonna 1616 ja nimesi sen alun perin Sir Thomas Smithin salmeksi arktisten tutkimusretkien puolestapuhujan ja rahoittajan, englantilaisen diplomaatin Sir Thomas Smythen (Smith; 1558–1625) mukaan. Vasta 1800-luvun puolivälissä tutkimusretkikunnat saavuttivat tätä pohjoisempia merialueita.[1]John Rossin vuoden 1818 tutkimusmatkan jälkeen salmen nimi sai nykyisen, lyhyemmän muotonsa.


Arkeologisen aineiston perusteella uskotaan, että ensimmäiset asukkaat saapuivat Grönlantiin noin 5 000 vuotta sitten Kanadasta Smithin salmen yli. Noin 1 200 eaa. vaelsi Thule-kansa Smithin salmen seutuville Alaskasta. Tämä väestö oli Grönlannin nykyasukkaiden esivanhempia.
