Thomas Gainsborough (14. toukokuuta 1727 Sudbury, Suffolk – 2. elokuuta 1788 Lontoo) oli englantilainen taidemaalari. [1]


Gainsborough oli 1700-luvun huomattavimpia englantilaisia maisema- ja muotokuvamaalareita. Hän maalasi usein lapsia maalaisympäristössä. Hän syntyi Suffolkissa, opiskeli Lontoossa, ja palasi Suffolkiin 1748, missä hän maalasi maisemia ja muotokuvia. Vuonna 1759 hän muutti Bathiin, missä hänestä tuli seurapiirien suosima muotokuvamaalari. Vuonna 1774 hän muutti Lontooseen,[2] joskin hän oli pitänyt siellä säännöllisesti näyttelyjä jo vuodesta 1761.[1]


Gainsborough oli kuninkaallisen taideakatemian Royal Academy of Artsin perustajajäsen vuonna 1768[1]. Vuonna 1780 Gainsborough maalasi muotokuvan kuningas Yrjö III:sta ja kuningattaresta ja sen jälkeen useista muistakin kuninkaallisista. Tämä antoi hänelle vaikutusvaltaa taidepiireissä ja akatemiassa.


Noin vuonna 1770 valmistunut Sininen poika on Gainsborough'n tunnetuimpia teoksia.[3]
