Aromataasi on entsyymi, jota esiintyy muidenkin sytokromi P450 -ryhmään kuuluvien entsyymien tavoin kaikissa domeeneissa. Aromataasi muun muassa aromatisoi androgeenejä estrogeeneiksi[1]. Kasveissa entsyymi muuttaa eri kumariiniyhdisteitä toisiksi kumariiniyhdisteiksi.[2]

Aromataasi on massaltaan noin 44 kDa. Toimiakseen tehokkaasti entsyymiin tulee olla kiinnittyneenä myös erilaisia koentsyymejä. Ihmisellä tällaisia ovat FAD- ja NADPH-molekyylit sekä Fe2+-ionit. Aromataasin inhibiittoreina toimivat muun muassa simetidiini ja emulgeenit.[2]

Aromataasin toimintaa häiritsevät lääkeaineet, aromataasi-inhibiittorit, on todettu tehokkaiksi rintasyövän hoidossa. Lääkeaineiden vaikutus perustuu elimistön estrogeenin määrän vähenemiseen. Tällöin myös syöpäsolujen kasvu hidastuu, koska estrogeenit voimistavat usein sairaiden solujen jakaantumista. Usein käytettyjä aromataasin estäjiä ovat anastrotsoli, eksemestaani ja letrotsoli.[3]
