Koatit eli nenäkarhut (Nasua) ovat Keski- ja Väli-Amerikassa eläviä puolikarhuja. Niiden sukuun kuuluu kaksi tai kolme eri lajia. Useimmat lähteet mainitsevat kaksi lajia[1]: punakoati eli koati eli punanenäkarhu (Nasua nasua) ja valkonenäkoati eli valkonenäkarhu (Nasua narica). Toisinaan myös valkonenäkoatin alalaji cozumelinkoati eli cozumelinnenäkarhu (Nasua narica nelsoni) luetaan omaksi lajikseen Nasua nelsoni. Neljäs koati-niminen laji, vuorikoati (Nasuella olivacea), ei kuulu varsinaisten koatien sukuun, mutta on niille sukua.[2]


Valkonenäkoateja elää esimerkiksi Nicaraguassa. Koateilla on paksu, raidallinen häntä, joka toimii kiipeillessä mainiona tasapainokeppinä. Niillä on nimensä mukaisesti pitkä kuono.



Elintavat |


Koatit käyttävät ravintonaan pääasiassa selkärangattomia, mutta ne syövät myös liskoja, sammakoita ja pieniä jyrsijöitä. Nenäkarhut saattavat joutua puuman tai jaguaarin syötäväksi. Tuntiessaan itsensä uhatuksi, koatit kiipeävät nopeasti puuhun. Urokset ovat erakkoja ja kuljeskelevat yksinään. Niitä kutsutaankin monin paikoin nimellä andasolos tai solitarios tai guaranin kielellä coatimundi eli yksinäinen koati. Naaraat elävät keskenään laumassa, jossa on noin 20–40 yksilöä. Kukin naaras synnyttää kolmesta kuuteen poikasta. Nenäkarhut ovat sukukypsiä noin 2-vuotiaina.
