Tämä artikkeli kertoo meren jumalattaresta. Nimen toinen kirjoitusasu Leukothoe viittaa ennen kaikkea kahteen muuhun kreikkalaisen mytologian henkilöön. Lisäksi nimi Leukothea viittaa asteroidiin 35 Leukothea.

Leukothea (m.kreik. Λευκοθέα, "valkoinen jumalatar") oli kreikkalaisessa mytologiassa meren jumalatar, joka alun perin tunnettiin Inona.


Tunnetuimmassa tarinassa Ino, Semelen sisar ja kuningas Athamaksen puoliso, muuttuu jumalattareksi sen jälkeen, kun Hera on tehnyt hänet – tai toisen version mukaan Athamaksen – hulluksi rangaistukseksi Dionysos-lapsen, Zeuksen syrjähypyn hedelmän, hoitamisesta. Ino hyppää poikansa Melikertes mukanaan mereen, ja Zeus muuttaa heidät säälistä meren jumaluuksiksi; Inon Leukotheaksi ja Melikerteksen Palaimoniksi[1].


Muuttuneena kuolemattomaksi jumalattareksi, Leukothea edusti myös yhtä monista jumalaisista avuista, joita Odysseus sai Odysseian aikana. Odysseuksen haaksirikkouduttua Leukothean tuli tätä sääli, ja hän ilmeistyi Odysseukselle lokin hahmossa. Hän antoi Odysseukselle hunnun, jonka ympärilleen sitomalla tämä ei hukkunut, vaan ajelehti faiaakkien maille.[2]


Myytistä on myös toinen versio, jonka alkuperä on Rodoksella. Sen mukaan mereen hypännyt ja jumalattareksi muuttunut hahmo oli Halia, meren nymfi.[3]
