Poliisin kynsissä on mustavalkoinen ja on 86 minuutin, eli tunnin ja 26 minuutin mittainen. Elokuva sai ensi-iltansa Yhdysvalloissa 13. helmikuuta vuonna 1932. Suomeen elokuva tuli teattereihin esitykseen 24. syyskuuta vuonna 1933. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ja Cosmopolitan Productions tuottivat elokuvan.

Poliisin kynsissä kertoo poliisipäällikkö Jim Fitzpatrickista (Huston), joka tappelee gangsteri Sam Belmonten (Hersholt) kanssa. Hän pyytää epärehelliseltä veljeltään, Ediltä (Ford), että hänen on pidettävä silmällä Daisya (Harlow), joka liittyi Belmonteen.
