Virtanen oli suomalainen rock-yhtye. Se perustettiin Tampereella vuoden 1973 syksyllä. Yhtyettä perustettaessa nimeksi otettiin Suomen yleisin sukunimi, yhdysvaltalaisen Smith-yhtyeen esimerkin mukaanlähde?.


Virtanen lopetti toimintansa vuonna 1977, kun Veltto Virtanen aloitti soolouran. Muu yhtye jatkoi nimellä Kontravirtanen, mutta muutti jo samana vuonna nimensä muotoon Kontra.
